Now it’s my time to learn Nursery Rhymes. Wondering why so? My daughter has just joined school and is in the process of learning rhymes. So I am also learning with her. From my childhood days I remember three or four rhymes
- Johnny Johnny, Yes pappa
- Twinkle Twinkle little star
- Jack and Jill went up the hill
- Humpty Dumpty ..
That’s it . My list stops there.
In this Twinkle Twinkle is my favourite. Such a wonderful piece
Twinkle Twinkle Little star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky !!
Isnt it wonderful ? Yes , it is ..Height of imagination. This small poem of four lines have everything engrossed in it. Even persons who haven’t imagined this, will sit and imagine it for a moment when we hear this rhyme.
Now today we have hundreds of rhymes which the kids need to learn. And we get all these burned in CD. Animation. That’s what it is. Don’t think the kids will have this imagination when they see the animated rhyme from the CD. Don’t know.
When lecturing about this, some one from inside my mind was telling .. hey, you also have a copy of rhymes CD at home .. Don’t talk too much. Yes, to tell you the truth, I also do have a copy of rhymes at home… But frankly I don’t entertain my kid with this by making her sit in front of my computer / TV with this CD on. I feel that this will kill their imagination.
Then why you bought the CD. You will not believe me if I say I bought it for myself. Because I didn’t knew the rhymes other than the four mentioned and also the tunes. So I bought this one so that I can learn these rhymes and teach to my little one orally.
Now what we do is when some situation comes, I recite that rhyme. In this way, the little one should relate the situation and the rhyme. For example, when we are outside at night and when we see the star, I ask her
“Which is rhyme with ‘Star’ in it ?? “
Then we together recite the rhyme – Twinkle Twinkle ..
Like this, we now have a collection of around 20 -30 rhymes.
- Hey Diddle diddle
- Jingle bells , Jingle Bells
- Mary had a little lamb ( I had learned the Malayalam version in my school)
- One two, buckle my shoes
- Hot Cross buns, Hot cross buns ..
And many more. Anyway, its really fun to learn and recite rhymes like this when you are surrounded by the little one who is just learning these rhymes.
